A key part of the project was the safe removal of the asbestos cement roofing, followed by the installation of a new 130mm composite roofing system.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">The refurbishment also went beyond the main roof covering. Rooflights, flashings, gutters and parapets were all in the scope, so these important elements were dealt with as part of the overall roof upgrade.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Together, the works focused on improving the building's safety, energy efficiency, natural daylight and protection from the weather.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">\u003Cstrong>Safe Removal of the Existing Asbestos Roof\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">The first stage was the safe removal of the existing asbestos cement roof, carried out by our own trained team under non-licensed asbestos controls. This protected operatives throughout the strip and re-sheet. Asbestos waste was segregated into dedicated hazardous waste skips for safe disposal.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Removing the old roof let us deliver a full refurbishment, with the new roofing system and associated details installed as one coordinated project.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">\u003Cstrong>Installation of a 130mm Composite Roofing System\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Once the existing roofing was removed, we installed a new Joris Ide composite roofing system with a 130mm PIR insulated core. It has an HPS200 coated finish in Goosewing Grey. We used the same system on our \u003Ca href=\"..\u002F..\u002F..\u002Fcase-studies\u002Fcommercial-roof-replacement-in-braintree\">commercial roof replacement in Braintree\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Composite roof panels combine an external weathering surface with an insulated core. The new roof achieves a U-value of 0.16 W\u002Fm²K, a major improvement on the poorly insulated asbestos sheets it replaced. The panels are FM Approved and backed by a 40-year manufacturer's warranty.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">The installation also transformed the roof's appearance, giving both units a clean, consistent finish.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">\u003Cstrong>Replacement Rooflights to Improve Natural Daylight\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">As part of the roof replacement, we installed 68 new rooflights, covering about 180m², or around 16% of the roof area.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Rooflights bring daylight into internal areas that get little light from windows. More natural light can reduce reliance on artificial lighting during the day and makes for a brighter working environment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">The new thermally efficient rooflights achieve a U-value of 0.95 W\u002Fm²K. That means the extra daylight doesn't come at the cost of heat loss.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">\u003Cstrong>Upgraded Flashings, Gutters and Parapets\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">A complete roof refurbishment needs attention to the details around the main roof covering. Alongside the composite roof, we upgraded the flashings, gutters and 340m² of parapets:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cul dir=\"ltr\">\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Flashings\u003C\u002Fstrong> protect junctions and transitions against water getting in.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Gutters:\u003C\u002Fstrong> we installed 129m of new gutters, lined with 25mm PIR insulation and a steel-laminated single-ply membrane with heat-welded joints, to collect and carry rainwater away reliably.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Parapets\u003C\u002Fstrong> were re-clad and fitted with new capping to protect the exposed roof edges and their connections with the surrounding structure.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Including these elements meant the project covered both the main roof and the details that support effective weather protection and drainage.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">\u003Cstrong>Solar PV: Turning the New Roof into a Power Source\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">The new composite roof gave SRS Aromatics the ideal base for on-site renewable energy. Once the roof was complete, a 98 kWp solar PV system was installed on it.
