SOLAR PANELS AND ROOF RENOVATION

Last summer, we were grateful to work on the contract for the Sunley House roof renovation, the headquarters of London's renowned bakery, Wenzels The Bakers. Wenzels sought to install solar panels on their roof but faced challenges due to the existing roof's condition and the need to maintain uninterrupted bakery operations during renovations.

OUR PROCESS

To address these challenges, we developed a comprehensive plan:

• Overcladding the Existing Roof: We reinforced the current roof with a new layer, providing a durable foundation for the solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and enhancing thermal efficiency by incorporating mineral wool insulation.
• Gutter Capacity Expansion: Recognizing changing rainfall patterns, we increased the gutter capacity to ensure effective drainage and prevent potential water damage.
• Roof Light Modification: We repurposed existing roof lights by filling them in, creating a larger surface area for PV panel installation, thereby maximizing energy generation.
• Coordination with M&E Contractor: Collaborating closely with Wenzels' mechanical and electrical contractor, we meticulously scheduled the repositioning of condenser units, air handling units (AHUs), and flues to minimize disruptions to bakery operations.
• Installation of Parapet Cladding and GRP Seals: We installed new parapet cladding, cappings, and glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) seals around penetrations to ensure the roof's durability and the integrity of the PV system installation.

THE SOLUTION

The project was executed with minimal disruption to Wenzels' operations, achieving the following outcomes:

• Enhanced Thermal Performance: The roof's thermal value was improved to an impressive 0.16, contributing to energy efficiency.
• Comprehensive Warranties: We provided a 40-year warranty for the roof and wall coverings, a 25-year warranty for the GRP sealing details, and our CRE insurance-backed
• HALO warranty, offering Wenzels complete peace of mind regarding their investment.
• Increased Roof and Cladding Area: The project encompassed a total roof and cladding area of 2,468m², providing ample space for the PV panels to generate substantial energy.

This successful renovation not only met Wenzels' immediate goal of installing solar panels but also enhanced the building's overall performance and sustainability, ensuring long-term benefits for the client.
