Solar Panels and Roof Renovation

In the early summer, we were fortunate enough to secure the contract for the prestigious Sunley House roof renovation project, which serves as the headquarters for the renowned London bakery giant, Wenzels The Bakers. Wenzels approached us with a clear and concise request: “We would like to install solar panels on our roof.”

Building upon this directive, we devised a comprehensive plan to ‘overclad’ the existing roof. This approach not only provided a sturdy foundation with a 40-year warranty to mount solar photovoltaic (PV) panels but also allowed us to enhance the roof’s thermal efficiency by incorporating mineral wool insulation.

Additionally, we expanded the gutter capacity to safeguard against changing rainfall patterns and repurposed the existing roof lights, filling them in before installing the new roof. This clever adaptation provided a larger surface area for the PV panels, enabling the roof to generate even more energy. This project presented unique challenges as the bakery operations needed to continue uninterrupted during our work. To ensure seamless operations, we collaborated closely with Wenzel’s appointed mechanical and electrical (M&E) contractor.

Together, we meticulously timed the raising and repositioning of condenser units, air handling units (AHUs), and flues, meticulously planning each step to minimise any disruptions to the business. To complete the project, we installed new parapet cladding and cappings, along with glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) seals around penetrations.

These finishing touches not only guaranteed the durability of the roof but also instilled confidence in the installation of the solar PV system. Under our watchful eye, the PV panels were expertly installed, and we proudly provided Wenzels with our Halo warranty—a comprehensive assurance covering both the new roof cladding system and the solar PV installation.

This offered the client total peace of mind, knowing that their investment was protected.
